As you're researching MCSE courses, it's possible you're in one of two categories: You could be considering completely changing your working life to the IT sector, and you've found a huge demand for properly qualified people. In contrast you're currently an IT professional - and you should formalise your skills with a qualification such as MCSE.

As you discover more about training providers, don't use those that compromise their offerings by not providing the latest Microsoft level. Over time, this will frustrate and cost the student a great deal more as they will have been educated in an outdated MCSE course which will need updating pretty much straight away. Stay away from organisations who are just trying to sell you something. You should be given detailed advice to ensure you are on the best program for your needs. Don't allow yourself to be sold a one-size-fits-all course by a second-rate college.

It's essential to have authorised exam simulation and preparation programs included in your course. Students regularly can get thrown by practising exam questions that don't come from authorised sources. It's not uncommon that the way questions are phrased is startlingly different and you should be prepared for this. A way to build self-confidence is if you check your knowledge through quizzes and practice in simulated exam environments prior to taking the actual exam.

One interesting way that colleges make more money is via an 'exam inclusive' package and then including an 'Exam Guarantee'. It looks impressive, but is it really:

We all know that we're still paying for it - it's quite obvious to see that it's been inserted into the gross price invoiced by the training company. It's certainly not free (it's just marketing companies think we'll fall for anything they say!) Passing first time is everyone's goal. Progressively working through your exams one at a time and funding them as you go makes it far more likely you'll pass first time - you put the effort in and are mindful of the investment you've made.

Go for the best offer you can find when you take the exam, and save having to find the money early. You'll also be able to choose where to do your exams - meaning you can choose a local testing centre. Including money in your training package for examination fees (and if you're financing your study there'll be interest on that) is madness. Don't line companies bank accounts with your hard-earned cash just to give them a good cash-flow! Many will hope you won't get round to taking them - then they'll keep the extra money. Additionally, many exam guarantees are worthless. Many training companies won't be prepared to pay for re-takes until you're able to demonstrate an excellent mock pass rate.

Exam fees averaged approximately 112 pounds twelve months or so ago when taken at local VUE or Pro-metric centres throughout the country. Therefore, why splash out often many hundreds of pounds extra to have 'Exam Guarantees', when common sense dictates that the most successful method is study, commitment and preparing with good quality mock and practice exams.

Some training providers will provide a useful Job Placement Assistance program, to assist your search for your first position. But don't place too much emphasis on it - it's quite easy for their marketing department to overplay it. In reality, the need for well trained IT people in this country is why employers will be interested in you.

You would ideally have help and assistance with preparing a CV and getting interviews though; and we'd recommend everybody to bring their CV up to date as soon as they start a course - don't delay till you've finished your exams. Various junior support roles have been offered to students who are still studying and have yet to take their exams. At the very least this will get you on your way. In many cases, an independent and specialised local employment agency (who will get paid by the employer when they've placed you) will perform better than any centralised training company's service. Also of course they should know the area and local employers better.

A big grievance of some training providers is how hard men and women are prepared to work to become certified, but how ill-prepared they are to market themselves for the role they've acquired skills for. Don't give up when the best is yet to come.
